I am willing to bet that many of you enjoy your cup of joe first thing in the morning. But with the current heat wave, the last thing that I want is a steaming cup of coffee to get the day rolling.

Steeping the coffee grounds in cold water gives the coffee a slightly sweeter flavor than if you were to use leftover brewed coffee. But don’t throw that stuff away, pour it into ice cube trays for coffee ice cubes. That prevents dilution of your iced latte.

Two glasses of iced coffee with coffee ice cubes, surrounded by scattered coffee beans on a white surface. A metal container is partially visible in the background.

I like to use my french press coffee pitcher to easily strain the mixture, but you can use a fine-mesh sieve lined with a cheese cloth. The recipe serves four, but it can easily be doubled or tripled for a week or two worth of joe on the go.

  • 4 cups water, cold or at room temperature
  • 1 cup milk
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • Coffee Ice cubes

Instructions

  • In a french press, pitcher, or container, combine the ground coffee and water. Allow the mixture to steep at least 12 hours and up to 24 hours.
  • Meanwhile, heat the milk and sugar in a small saucepan over medium-low heat just until the sugar dissolves. Refrigerate until ready to use.
  • Press the french press to strain the coffee grounds or use a fine-mesh sieve lined with cheese cloth to strain the coffee mixture.
  • Fill four glasses with the ice cubes. Pour the coffee over the ice cubes. Add 1/4 cup of the sweetened milk to each glass. Enjoy!

    Mmm this looks awesome!

Why does the coffee need to steep so long?!

Another option is to use a Toddy coffee concentrate system. It will allow you to use a full pound of coffee at a time to create the base concentrate and is simple and fairly inexpensive. We've had one for over 20 years and it works great.
Love the recipe and milk/sugar combo. Great summer recipe.

  4. Nicole says:

Since the water is cold and not heated, you need to steep it for a longer period of time to extract the full flavor.
