Remember the Apple Butter? I wanted to share with you one of my favorite ways to use it. It is this delicious tartine that is an absolute must in my house each Fall.
A tartine is simply the French term for an open-faced sandwich. In this version, I use slices of my Homemade Country Bread, Black Forest ham, extra-sharp white Cheddar cheese, Dijon mustard, and, of course, apple butter. Simply layer the ingredients and place them under the broiler until the cheese melts; then you’ll have a quick and delicious lunch. I also enjoy this with a nice soup or salad for dinner, and I have even made it in mini form for an appetizer. I do hope you’ll give it a try!
Note: I use white Cheddar cheese, but Gruyère can be substituted as an alternative. You can also use a mixture of both, like the Original blend from Wood River Creamy.

Ham, Cheddar, and Apple Butter Tartine

Ingredients
- 6 (½-inch) thick slices of good Country Bread
- 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter, softened
- ⅓ cup apple butter, homemade or store bought
- 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
- 2 tablespoons grainy Dijon mustard
- 1 ½ pounds Black Forest Ham, thinly sliced (I use Boar’s Head)
- 12 ounces extra-sharp white Cheddar cheese, freshly grated
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives
Instructions
- Place oven rack to highest position and preheat the broiler. In a small bowl combine the mustards and set aside.
- Butter 1 side of each slice of bread with the butter. Place on a baking sheet. Broil until the bread begins to brown, about 2 minutes. Remove from the oven and spread the mustard mixture evenly over the toasted bread. Spread the apple butter evenly over the mustard. Layer the ham and the top with the cheese slices. Return the baking sheet to the oven and broil until the cheese melts and begins to brown in some spots, about 2 minutes. Remove from the oven and sprinkle with chives. Serve immediately. Enjoy!

We are having our FIRST frosty Fall morning here in Florida. This is my favorite time of year and I was looking for a special "cozy" breakfast treat to go with our European coffee we like. This recipe is delicious (especially since I had left over aged Cabot cheddar you recommended from your mac n' cheese!) My husband and I loved this! Even my 3 yr old daughter said, "YUM!!!" this is such a great idea! to put something sweet in a savory sandwich. i just spread apricot preserves w/ dijon mustard on my turkey paninis. soo yummy!
